We’re excited about Uncharted Waters, an upcoming exhibition at Reverse Space . The show will feature work by A.D. alum Alex Yudzon, and other artists in the REVERSE Artist Community. The show opens Friday, April 12th, from 7 – 10pm @ REVERSE (28 Frost Street, Williamsburg). See you there!

–

Uncharted Waters: REVERSE 2013 is the inaugural exhibition of work by members of the REVERSE Artist Community, a group of artists who feature regularly in its exhibitions and programming. Participating artists include: CHi KA, Melissa F. Clarke, Serra Victoria Bolthwell Fels, Brandon Friend & Jason Douglas Griffin, Daria Irincheeva and Aleksey Yudzon.

Uncharted Waters: REVERSE 2013 presents work in a variety of media, including installations by Melissa F. Clarke and Daria Irincheeva, two-dimensional works on paper by Alex Yuzdon and collaborative duo Brandon Friend & Jason Douglas Griffin, and video projection by Chi KA. While formally different, these works demonstrate a shared interest in investigating unfamiliar topographies and the creative challenges of visualizing places that have yet to be discovered. Through the appropriation of old maps and travel images or the translation of cartographic postulations into three-dimensional spaces, the works presented in REVERSE 2013explore novel ways of traversing the boundaries of our everyday environments.

Uncharted Waters: REVERSE 2013 will run from April 12th to May 12th

AD Projects is pleased to announce the one-day exhibition of CHROMATIC HI-FIVE!, a public fabric installation by Amanda Browder. The installation of CHROMATIC HI-FIVE! is the first in a series of events produced in conjunction with AD Projects’ exhibition Spectrum Vision, currently on view at Reverse Space in Williamsburg. Browder’s sculpture will cover a 17-foot U-Haul truck with fabric donated by people in greater New York City and Toronto. The piece was originally constructed for the Nuit Blanche Public Art Festival/LEITMOTIF, curated by Stuart Keeler, in Toronto, Canada in 2010. CHROMATIC HI-FIVE!, will make its Williamsburg debut in front of Reverse Space on June 17th as a complement to Browder’s wall installation Synesthesia: Lightning + Drips in Spectrum Vision, and will be open for viewing all day.

Spectrum Vision at Reverse Space will be open from 3 – 9pm on Sunday, June 17th. The evening will also include a sound performance by Brooklyn-based electronic collective HEAVYPET (feat. Crinkles). HEAVYPET will perform an experimental set from 6 – 9 pm.

Reverse Space is a hub for the Northside Festival; please check here for details about the festival and other arts events happening in the neighborhood: http://www.northsidefestival.com/art

Spectrum Vision is an exhibition of young visionaries. The seven artists in Spectrum Vision are unified by separate, singular conceptions of the world as it might have been, as it could be now, and as it may become. They are not simply of our time; they are beyond it. The exhibition features work by Alex Arcadia, Jeffrey Beebe, Allison Berkoy, Ryan Brennan, Amanda Browder, Jacolby Satterwhite, and Alex Yudzon.

Spectrum Vision will be on view through June 30, 2012 at Reverse Space. For more information, please contact info@adprojects.org.

New York based curatorial collaborative AD Projects hosted a group exhibition entitledSpectrum Vision this Sunday at Reverse Art Space in Williamsburg. Notable standouts of the show were Alex Yudzon, Jeffrey Beebe, and artist & sculptor Alex Arcadia.

Yudzon’s Atlas Cloud series, mixed media over pages of a 1937 atlas uses lines of demarcation as composition and detail, exploring boundaries of nations and the relevance of symbols that divide form and distance.

“I am incredibly inspired by the concept of travel,” Said Yudzon. “Some of these pieces represent, in broad strokes, what the landscape might look like in the area the map represents, allowing the viewer to fill the finer details with their own imagination.”

Jeffrey Beebe shows a huge cast of characters in The Copper Palanquin, part of a larger series entitled “Adventures in Refractoria.” The characters are numerous and delicately conceived — residents of an imaginary world which parallels Beebe’s own history.

AD Projects is proud to present Spectrum Vision, an exhibition of young visionaries. The seven artists in Spectrum Vision are unified by separate, singular conceptions of the world as it might have been, as it could be now, and as it may become. They are not simply of our time; they are beyond it.

Painter, sculptor and conceptualist Alex Arcadia re-imagines the essence of power and image through invention. Operating under the slogan BRIGHTSHINYFUTURE, Arcadia has devised a system of interplaying signs and relics to create a futuristic mythology linked to a self-titled cosmology, Arcadia. Arcadia encompasses both history and fantasy, addressing themes of propagandistic logic, nation building, commercial enterprise, commodity culture, collectivity and individuality. The SuperGymnast, an erotically charged voluptuous goddess and recurring central figure in his work, will be on display.

Over the last ten years, Jeffrey Beebe has created a large cast of recurring characters in his drawings, collectively titled Adventures in Refractoria. Such figures as Greencandle the Archmage, Phacops Attaboise, and the Wild Uncles populate Refractoria, an imagino-ordinary world which parallels the artist’s personal history. Beebe drops these characters into various scenarios and records their reactions, such that Refractoria has developed a rich history and complicated social structure. Large drawings such as The Copper Palanquin and Celestial Map of Western Refractoria display the complicated geographical schemata and social machinations of Refractoria. Influences as varied as the woodcuts of Albrecht Dürer, the pen and ink cartoons of Honoré Daumier and William Hogarth, and Dungeons and Dragons illustrations inform Beebe’s intricately conceived drawings. Each work on display in Spectrum Vision constitutes an entry in Beebe’s ongoing visual novel.

Allison Berkoy’s video Another Day plays with ideas of internal versus external realities, doppels, dissociations, and multiplicities. Beginning with the text, “Last night, I think I became someone else,” the video follows a central figure who fractures into what appear to be multiple versions of himself. Berkoy allows the viewer the space to decide whether these versions, or others, are physically in existence or realized only in the mind of the character. The video suggests that time does not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion, and that we are not confined to one physical or universal space; other possibilities exist if we are open to exploration.

Ryan Brennan believes that all facets of our reality are built upon accumulated personal truths, which are in a constant state of flux. Through his work, he aims to identify and manipulate these building blocks of perception in a way that leads to a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the world. Comfort Amnesia, the material collage, is a fragmented, three-dimensional composition of stills from his video collage of the same name. Its fractured planes and jumbled images reflect a disillusionment with the sociopolitical status quo in America. Fragile Gestures, another film collage from the series Video Tangentials, is a visual riff on nature, optimism, and urban life.

Amanda Browder creates vibrant large-scale fabric installations, which wrap, encase, and augment surfaces and spaces. Her multi-colored fabric will transform one of the walls in Spectrum Vision with a wall hanging punctuated by large stuffed fabric lighting bolts. Browder will also present Chromatic Hi-Five at Reverse Space on June 17, as part of Williamsburg’s Northside Festival. The Chromatic Hi-Five installation consists of a 17 foot truck covered by rainbow colored weatherproof fabric. Bands of color on the exterior of the truck converge at a central locus in the truck’s bed, creating a three-dimensional vortex which will be visible from the street.

The Reifying Desire Series by Jacolby Satterwhite is a collection of six of videos, which comprise a surrealist narrative and creation myth. The title stems from Satterwhite’s ongoing creative collaboration with his mother’s drawings and how they demonstrate desire. The artist’s mother, battling schizophrenia, created songs of desire and thousands of schematic drawings and inventions influenced by consumer culture, medicine, fashion, surrealism, math, sex, astrology, philosophy, and matrilineal concerns. Her drawings mostly depict common objects and luxury products found in the domestic sphere. Video pieces Reifying Desire 1 – 6 incorporate 230 3-D modeled versions of Satterwhite’s mother’s drawings, the artist’s body, and animated figures to map out a queer creation myth that begins a virtual phallic tower and gradually ends up in real space. The narration is loose, and almost acts as an exquisite corpse between CG technology, video, drawing, and performance. Reifying Desire 1 and 2 will be on display in Spectrum Vision, as well as a series of video stills.

Alex Yudzon’s topographical maps of mountains and abstracted, aerial views of cloud formations from the series Magic Mountains and Impossible Clouds are composed of delicate lines and small symbols. The placement and proximity of symbols–each of which are freighted with multiple cultural and personal meanings–are significant to the reading of the maps. Yudzon describes his iconographic vocabulary as something like a language. The Atlas Cloud series, in which cloud formations are superimposed over pages from a 1937 atlas, explores themes of impermanence. These works seem to show that everything factual about the existence and boundaries of nations is as mutable as the atmosphere above.

Spectrum Vision will be on view from June 3 – June 30, 2012 at Reverse Space. AD Projects will host an opening reception from 5 – 9 pm on Sunday, June 3, featuring a performance by Jacolby Satterwhite. Viewing hours and additional events will be posted periodically on our website and social media outlets, so please check regularly. For more information, please contact info@adprojects.org.

Dossier Journal invited us to be their fourth guest contributor to the Look section of their blog, and we gladly accepted. You can see the post here, and we’ve re-posted the images here as well.

Last year, AD Projects coined the term “caméra vivant” to describe narrative, non-documentary camera-based artwork that both captures a performative act and is created with the intention of being experienced by an audience as a video or photograph. We don’t often go around inventing terms, and we deliberated for quite a while before deciding that the concept deserved to be named. We presented CAMERA VIVANT, an exhibition of work by emerging and mid-career artists, at the Central Utah Art Center in February 2011. These images explore this subcategory of new media where performance and the camera, both still and moving, intersect.
